DIY Walking Tour 13eme
The 13eme of Paris is an area that will enchant and surprise. Rarely spoken about it is a locals neighborhood with that old-world Latin Quarter feel mixed with a fresh Provincial country feel, particularly around the famous 'Butte aux Cailles' one of the other hilly neighbourhoods of Paris which we rate as the quaintest cosiest village in Paris, next to Montmatre. Quieter, less tourists, and untouched. It is also home to little Chinatown and surprisingly it is quite the nightspot with numerous bars, nightclubs and live music venues.
Enjoy secret nooks and gardens, small museums, historic churches and local bustling authentic gourmet markets and all the usual cafes, boulangeries, brasseries and bars.
9am Cafe Canon - begin with a coffee (after breakfast at your B&B of course), at a sunny corner cafe with plenty of street action. MAP
10am Butte Aux Cailles - take a walk around this gorgeous hilly village of hidden corners and dreamy homes, country freestanding mansions, and enjoy the street art this area is known for, get lost in its hidden streets and enjoy the village life with plenty of cafes and shops and do not miss the Paroisse Sainte-Anne church and the hidden Piscine Butte aux Cailles (if you feel like a dip) MAP - the main streets to see in the Butte aux Cailles are Rue de la Butte Aux Cailles, Rue des Cinq Dimantes, and Rue Bobillot.
11.00am Laurent Duchene - The most delicious patisserie/boulangerie in the 13eme. Most divine chocolate eclairs, and all the usual croissant, pain au chocolat and madeleines, done beautifully deliciously MAP
11.30am Marche Auguste-Blanqui - Experience an authentic bustling local fresh food market in Paris, with all the smells of fresh breads, meats and cheeses, fruit and vegi's. Watch the locals go about their weekly shopping, taste-test, enjoy the atmosphere MAP
12.30pm Chez Gladines - the best value of money Brasserie in all Paris, in a very intimate family style environment, classic red checked table cloth, rowdy and festive, dependable and delicious French fare and happy service, this is an iconic institution in Paris for locals who know where value lies and visitors in-the-know MAP
1.30pm Parc de Choissy - a lovely long lunch should be followed by a little stroll and relax in a beautiful Parisian green space. There is even one of the few remaining traditional outdoor Parisian Puppet theatres here MAP
2.30pm Quartier Asiatique - Immerse your senses in the largest cultural and commercial centre for the Asian community in Paris, in what is also known as Petit Asie, the triangle between Avneue d'Ivry, Boulevard Massena and Aveue de Choisy, numerous Chinese, Loatian and Cambodian supermarkets, take away and restaurants, markets and more. Try a few delights at Patisserie de Choisy - the Durian tarts are amazing and the Tartelette aux Ouefs are so good you will faint. MAP
4pm Manufacture Nationale des Gobelins - The national Tapestry museum and factory is impressive, and Tapestries are still made here and visitors can watch weavers at work. The 1912 Factory takes in the 18th Chapel and the Beauvais workshops MAP
5.30pm Cite de la Mode et du Design - Head to the rooftop terrace for pre-dinner/sunset drinks with stunning views at the city of Fashion and Design, the site is immediately recognizable by the ultra-contemporary bright green exterior. There are also shops and restaurants inside MAP
6.30pm Au Petit Marquery - A classy and classic French restaurant/brasserie with lovely atmosphere, the quintessential Paris feel, wooden and red leather benches, traditional French fare and fair prices, fixed price menus available. MAP
8pm Petit Bain or dJOON - Petit Bain is a live music venue on a boat moored by the side of the Seine, featuring many local and international acts. Check website for shows - on deck enjoy drinks while watching the Seine river at night. MAP
If dancing the night away to a nightclub with international DJS is more your thing, head to dJOON the hottest soul, funk, jazz nightclub in Paris - with stylish bars and sitting areas too MAP
10pm Late night wine - Or if you prefer another glass or two of wine in a more regular locals bar head back to Butte aux Cailles for a selection of cosy ones. We like Tandem, La Folie en Tete and Sputnik
