Cassis and the Calanques, Sth of France
This year/season in France we took a trip to 2 NEW off-the-beaten-tourist trail relaxing and beautiful summer spots: Biarritz Beach and Cassis & the Calanques,
in the Sth of France. We want to share them with you and encourage you
to stay in on of our neighbouring L'Apartment homes. We will help with
all travel logistics.
Today we're introducing: Cassis and the breathtaking Calanques :)
Cassis and the Calanques
Cassis is a popular port town in 20km East of Marseille in the Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region of France. Once a regular fishing village now a bustling tourist destination, sought for its small quaint village feel, famous cliffs (falaises) and the sheltered inlets called calanques.
The wines of Cassis are white and rosé, and not to be confused with crème de cassis, a specialty of Burgundy. and the famed aperitif hour drinks is the Pastis and Ricard.
We sipped and enjoyed the local liquids and sunny surrounds for 2 days.
We enjoyed the local market and picked up many fine fresh produce delicacies
We basked in the sun @ the plage de bestouan - 9 min walk from the town centre. MAP
We enjoyed a hike to the first 2 Calanques (beautiful sheltered inlets)
@ Port Miou - 33 minutes from town centre - MAP
@ Port Pin - 1hr 21min from town centre - MAP
And boat trip to the calanques again, to reach the beautiful 3rd Clanque d'En Vau - - although walking it would have been much more beautiful seen from up top. It takes 2 hrs to reach from town centre for the adventurous :) MAP

Kayaking is possible too :)
Finally we spent 2 spellbinding nights staring or hypnotised rather, by the chateau that looms luminously over the port while enjoying local seafood specialties and well...more wine and pastis :)

Best time to Go:
Shoulder season: May and June and Sept. The peak July and August from what we hear ets completely over-run and for such a small village we can only imagine...
How to get there:
From Marseille: Gare de Marseille Saint-Charles to Gare de Cassis although the station at Cassis is 3km out. OR by bus from Prado Castellano in Marseille goes right to Cassis centre taking 30-4omins. Though buses are infrequent, be sure to check timetables HERE
